The job that I had gotten laid off from a few weeks before had destroyed my self- confidence and I had no idea what I wanted to be doing, or what I could be doing. I was at a loss to determine how to move forward and find the “right” next job for myself and petrified of making another bad job decision.
My biggest challenge was getting clear on what kind of work I wanted to do moving forward. I was a refugee of the web development world and the thought of continuing to “build websites” made me cringe. Working with Joel helped me to see that there was a whole realm of possibilities for me to discover and that my choice needed to come from my “heart” and not my practical “head”. He was able to help me clarify my thoughts on what was really important to me in a career. This was really powerful and enabled me to make a clear choice of what I wanted my next job to be and more importantly, NOT be.
Joel was instrumental in helping me move past some of my fears and self doubts about my career/skills to a place of confidence again. We did this through different homework assignments that had me confront some of those doubts head on and move past them.
Through working with Joel, I was able to clearly determine what was important for me to have in my next job besides a salary. I actually turned down a very stable and secure job with SUN Microsystems to go to work for a start up with higher risks, less salary, and less benefits. You can call me crazy, but I know that I made the right decision. I am now working from home, traveling, and working with the most amazing team of people I have had the pleasure to work with in my entire career. My levels of stress have gone down, I’m working less and am thrilled and delighted with the work that I am doing and the contributions that my work is having/will have on the lives of thousands of people across the planet.
